Conducting Comprehensive School Risk Vulnerability Assessments

This training session is intended to prepare the participant to comprehensively examine a school’s physical environment for crime vulnerabilities. This newly updated course used current research and evidence-based approaches to address the school violence and active shooter concern from a realistic viewpoint. Utilizing a multi-faceted approach which includes Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design, Situational Crime Prevention and the Rational Choice Theory, this course provides a unique understanding of how the environment impacts crime in the school. This course provides a newly developed easy to use customizable foundational survey instrument to begin to identify vulnerabilities, suggest solutions, and prepare a comprehensive report.

Course Learning Objectives

  • Be able to define risk and how it is determined and measured.

  • Gain an understanding of the current statistical data relevant to the topic of school safety and security.

  • Gain a knowledge of the current practices being implemented to address school security and recognize the strengths and weaknesses thereof.

  • Gain an understanding of the application Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) as related to the school environment.

  • Gain sufficient knowledge to conduct a comprehensive vulnerability security assessment and identify solutions to address the vulnerabilities.

  • Recognize the significant interdependence of physical security, training, response training, and policy implementation toward achieving a safer school environment.
