School Violence, Safety and Security Conference 2 Days

This course is recommended for any seeking an understanding and realistic evidence-based approach to addressing safety in the K-12 school. 

This training by an expert in the field of school crime prevention methodology will review tactics, techniques and methods currently being used or proposed across the United States in k-12 schools to address school violence. This course will provide those with responsibility for making the tough budgetary and protective decisions confidence in the decisions they make, having done so from a more realistic and evidence based informed position.  

Using actual practices recently implemented or proffered as solutions to the school violence and shooting events, the instructor and participants will examine the focused need, practicality, and effectiveness of the various solutions from a realistic risk perspective. Each approach commonly used, as well as the anticipated outcome of the approach, will be broken down for participants to create their own unique approach from a evidence and experience. One Size does NOT fit all!

Each of the practices are discussed openly to identify the pros and cons of each, to provide the participant a promising practices list which will fit the need of administrators in their district. 

Included in this course is a brief overview of the topic of Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design (CPTED) which includes its principles, applications and why it is so popular in school safety today. We will also examine the value of policies in addressing risk, the unique concerns of the school environment, the strengths and weaknesses of current behavioral threat assessment teams, and how to enhance and improve upon each.

Participants will be provided with a resource manual with identified referenced sources, which provides additional information on the topics discussed for future use by the attendees. Much more information is covered in the manual than can be discussed in the allotted time for this course.    

Course Objectives:  

 1.    To provide those responsible for making security decisions in schools with an understanding of existing popular practices being implemented by school districts today and how to enhance their effective use.  

2.     To provide participants with a basic understanding of the pros and cons of existing solutions being offered as a means of enhancing school safety, and why they are of value or not of value. 

3.     To ensure that participants have a basic understanding and working knowledge of Crime Prevention through Environmental Design and what it can and cannot accomplish. 

4.     To provide peer discussion and instructor-led evaluation of popular techniques being offered for school safety measures today.
