Jail Leadership & PREA Management
Course Description Package
Jails today are being asked to do more with less — recruiting into a shrinking applicant pool, promoting officers into supervisory roles faster than ever, and expecting those new leaders to manage crisis scenes, PREA responsibilities, and daily operations with little formal preparation. That gap between promotion and readiness is where good officers either grow into strong leaders or quietly burn out. This course is designed to enrich and inspire staff to achieve their best outcome.
Jail Leadership & PREA Management is a two-day, in-person training built for correctional officers and supervisors who are ready to lead with confidence, solve complex problems, and make defensible decisions under pressure. The course moves beyond theory into the operational realities of running a modern jail — from recruiting and retaining staff, to reviewing use-of-force incidents, to managing a PREA program that protects inmates and the agency alike. Every session pairs case studies and real-world scenarios with guided discussion, so participants leave with tools they can use on their next shift, not just concepts they read about once.
Who This Course Is For:
- Correctional officers preparing for or newly promoted into supervisory roles
- Jail supervisors and shift commanders responsible for staff management, misconduct investigations, or use-of-force review
- Facility administrators seeking to standardize leadership development and reduce liability exposure across their command staff
- County, municipal, state, and private correctional facilities pursuing ACA, PREA, or CALEA compliance benchmarks
By the end of this course, participants will be able to:
- Apply legal and ethical standards to jail management decisions in ways that reduce facility liability exposure
- Implement staff recruitment, retention, and professional development strategies that build a resilient correctional workforce
- Conduct employee misconduct investigations that satisfy due process standards and produce defensible documentation
- Apply use-of-force review and documentation practices aligned with AJA, DOJ, and Texas standards, including relevant case law such as Kingsley v. Hendrickson
- Preserve crime scenes and evidence in a correctional setting, including assaults, suicides, and in-custody deaths
- Develop and manage a PREA (Prison Rape Elimination Act) compliance program, including prevention, screening, reporting, and investigation protocols that protect inmates and reduce agency liability
- Lead staff through high-pressure decisions, organizational change, and workplace wellness challenges using practical communication frameworks
What separates this course from generic leadership training is that it's built specifically around jail operations — not adapted from a general supervisory curriculum. Every module draws on real correctional case studies, from use-of-force reviews to PREA investigations, so participants aren't learning leadership in the abstract. They're learning how to lead a housing unit, a shift, and a facility.
