Supervising and Managing the Drug Unit

Description

Please be aware that this class is a 24-hour training. Therefore, the training will be 8am-5pm local time each day.

 

This course provides leadership development training to future and current first-level and mid-level narcotics supervisors. The program provides the supervisors with knowledge, and skills that will enhance their ability to supervise, motivate, and evaluate narcotics officers and meet the unique challenges presented to a supervisor of a proactive narcotics unit. The program provides training in areas including, operational planning, confidential source management drug trends, building your team, case development, quality control techniques, and how to provide value.

Drug Trends
Topics include a refresher of illicit street drugs, current and emerging trends as well as officer safety issues related to clandestine labs. Officers will be involved in a discussion of current local and national drug trends that are impacting their agency.

Case Development
Officers will learn techniques used to identify sources of drug intelligence, the importance of setting goals and standards for their team and implementing quality control protocols.

Confidential Informant Management
The use of confidential informants is a powerful and necessary tool in narcotics operations but it can also be a huge liability. Officers will get the supervisors perspective on dealing with informant motivations, informant / detective relations and quality control of the informant program.

Planned Operations
Officers will be instructed on the supervisors role in planning safe operations such as undercover drug buys, surveillance, and raids.

Case Studies
A variety of actual narcotics cases will be broken down and cover the all of the topics covered during the day

Leadership
Officers will discuss several subjects including an evaluation of leadership styles, which style fits best their personality, motivation of drug investigators and servant leadership.

Team building
Your team is only as good as the weakest link, therefore it is imperative that officers know how to make the most out of their team. Officers will be instructed on utilizing the strengths and weakness of their team members.

Problem employee
Topics will include the importance of dealing with problem employees head on, documentation, and “Rock Star” employees.

Selection of drug unit personnel
When given the opportunity to select new members of your team there is several factors to take into consideration. During this block of training topics such as who to recruiting, questions for a promotional board, identification of skills and personalities important to their team.

Brining Value
To often drug units as considered the most exclusive unit of any department. During this block of training officers will discuss ways in which the drug unit can provide value to their community, agency and team members without sacrificing their effectiveness.

Quality Control
As the leader of a drug unit the supervisor needs to set the highest standards. Officers will discuss the importance implementing quality controls on all aspects of the teams work product including operations, reports and court appearances.
