Field Training Officer Certification

Description

Please be aware that this class is a 35-hour training. Therefore, the first four (4) days of training will be 8am-5pm local time. The last day will be 8am-12pm local time.

 

 

This course is designed to enhance the skills and effectiveness of Field Training Officers by providing practical tools and instructional strategies for training new officers. Participants will explore the principles of structured field training programs, including a modified version of the San Jose model, and will learn how to deliver training confidently and professionally. The curriculum focuses on instructional techniques, evaluation standards, documentation, and legal responsibilities to ensure a consistent and accountable training process.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the core structure of the San Jose Model and compare it with alternative FTO programs

  • Recognize the instructional and interpersonal demands placed on FTOs

  • Identify common rating errors and how to avoid them

  • Apply principles of adult learning to field instruction

  • Understand legal considerations that affect field training practices

  • Conduct accurate and constructive performance evaluations

  • Deliver instruction using structured training briefs

  • Use the rating scale and reference numbers correctly

  • Accurately complete the Daily Observation Report (DOR)

  • Design realistic training scenarios and supplemental learning plans

  • Understand the role of program oversight and accountability in successful field training programs
