This course was designed to give the attendees an advanced understanding of the types, causes, and risk associated with domestic violence. Intervening in domestic violence situations can be very dangerous for all parties involved. The officer must understand the significance of not only the complaint (911 Call) but also how to recognize the severity of the situations once on scene. There are multiple reasons why domestic violence occurs, it can be because of upbringing, exposure to violence (Predisposition and Learned), internal malfunctions, and/or situations that can trigger violence.
The attendee will enhance their understanding of the full scope of what is needed to help prevent and mitigate return visits by availing the victim(s) to the resources available to them as well as supports and services for the offender. This course will also address the liabilities and limits of police intervention as well as the Case Law associated with Domestic Violence. We will also discuss the strategies for separation, de-escalation, and alternatives. We will study a variety of instances of when domestic violence became tragic as well as instances of improper intervention and its consequences.
