Domestic Violence and Policing

Description

Incidents of Domestic Violence occurs in all society, regardless of social factors such as race, ethnicity, gender, and social economic status. Domestic violence can be in the form of physical, emotional, financial, and sexual often appearing on a continuum but can also be an isolated incident. Domestic violence escalates over time and can eventually lead to death. When responding to a domestic violence incident, police officers often find themselves in a dangerous situation that can escalate rapidly. It is important that police have the skills at de-escalating domestic violence, or interpersonal violence, safely.

This course provides participants with an in-depth view of domestic violence focusing on current trends within interpersonal violence while understanding the cycle of violence in understanding both the victim and offender. Participants will develop a thorough understanding in de-escalation techniques, victimology, criminology, and investigative measures. Participants will also be provided with in-depth communication strategies in dealing with certain types of domestic violence with the focus on safety, for all involved. We will discuss the different types of interpersonal violence, current trends, data, and statistics, while also incorporating case studies.

 

Upon Completion Participants will be able to:
