Cold Case: A Multidisciplinary Approach to Unsolved Cases

The cold case and unsolved homicide training and curriculum is a two-day instructional symposium designed for law enforcement professionals and prosecutors, who are actively involved and engaged in unsolved homicide investigations. The lecture will provide an overview of unsolved case methodology, case file assessment, obstacles to unsolved investigations, and resources available. These include advancements in DNA including familial and genetic genealogy, cyber forensics, and criminal intelligence and analysis. The class will discuss focusing on a team approach to cold cases utilizing a two-pronged approach involving analysis from a data driven and advanced forensics perspective, for a holistic and comprehensive analysis of cases on an individual basis.

While the emphasis will be on investigative strategies, to increase the likelihood of successful investigations, participants are encouraged to submit or discuss an actual unsolved case for review by classmates and instructors for potential investigative leads. Upon completion, attendees will have a working knowledge of investigative protocol and strategies in dealing with unsolved cases, along with new investigative techniques to approach cases. This lecture is presented in an interactive format including power-point, class discussion, and supplemental handouts.

• The resources available to investigate homicides utilizing the newest advancements in DNA and criminal intelligence.
• Review and evaluation of actual case studies and examples
• Team evaluation of all aspects of case file including crime scenes, photographs, interviews, documentation, and physical evidence
