This course is designed to provide the most up-to-date training on the Prison Rape Elimination Act (PREA). PREA was created to address an ongoing epidemic of sexual abuse, sexual harassment, and the rape of inmates who are confined as a result of criminal acts which lead to incarceration.
PREA is not just for adult inmates, it also includes juveniles who have been incarcerated as a result of the same. Understanding the background of PREA, is just the beginning, because even with this federal mandate, inmates continue to get violated by other inmates, corrections officers, and other individuals that may have contact with an inmate.
One of the most misunderstood mandates of PREA, is the fact that an inmate cannot consent to sexual relations with staff or officers, it is a crime and these inmates have special protection against acts committed by employees, visitors, or volunteers. We will dig a little deeper in the understanding of misconceptions, rules, and compliance.
