This training course provides a comprehensive overview of procedures, policies, and best practices for preparing for and responding to officer-involved critical incidents, including on-duty shootings.  The curriculum draws upon relevant case law, recent real-world incidents, actual investigations, and established guidance from sources like the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Police Executive Research Forum.  Participants will examine applicable use of force laws as they relate to critical incidents, as well as the evolution of law enforcement responses to deadly force encounters based on historical and contemporary events.  Additionally, the course will explore human performance factors and their impact on officers, supervisors, and agencies during high stress critical incidents.

Goals/Objectives of the Course:

  • Attendees will be able to discuss the history behind the national movement toward the use of body worn cameras and how that use relates to officer involved critical incidents.
  • Attendees will be able to list the relevant best practices associated with officer involved shootings and officer involved deaths.
  • Attendees will be able to explain the best policies and procedures for their agencies to deal with and investigate the aftermath of an officer involved shooting and/or officer involved death.
