From Traffic Stop to Federal Cases: Developing Investigations with Federal Nexus

Successful investigations require more than simply documenting an incident—they require investigators to recognize opportunities that lead to larger, more impactful cases, including those with federal implications. This course teaches officers and investigators how to think critically, identify additional investigative leads, recognize criminal patterns, and develop cases beyond the initial offense. Particular emphasis is placed on recognizing indicators of firearms trafficking, human trafficking, financial crimes, narcotics trafficking, gang activity, and other transnational crimes that often surface during routine traffic stops and police calls but go overlooked. Students will learn when and how to involve federal partners, and how early recognition of a federal nexus can significantly increase the scope and impact of an investigation. Drawing from more than 14 years of federal law enforcement experience, participants will leave with practical strategies that can be immediately applied to patrol, criminal investigations, and specialized assignments.
