Martin_Death and Homicide Investigation

Description

Course Objectives:
Law enforcement officers, when assigned to investigate Death and Homicide investigations are placed in a position of responsibility that quite frankly, failure is not an accepted option. Within the rank and file of the agency, to society at large, people place demands upon officers to solve crimes as quickly as possible. Fair or unfair as it may be, it is a reality that each officer senses and thus compels him or her to produce results. However, as with any discipline, when human resources are rushed, regardless of the endeavor, mistakes are made. Things are overlooked. To reiterate, when a person is physically assaulted, or worst human life itself is taken through violence, failure is not an option. People who victimize others must be held accountable for crimes committed and the criminal justice system is the government arm that must provide the resources necessary to bring justice to bear.

Course Overview:
This course covers several broad aspects related to homicide investigation, referred to here as tasks, tactics, and tools. Investigation goals include preserving the crime scene and gathering evidence, establishing the victim's identity, determining cause and time of death, finding, and interviewing witnesses, reconstructing the victim's last hours or days, establishing suspect identities, locating suspects, and arresting suspects and preparing for prosecution. Investigators must consider homicide statistics, types of homicides, and methods of committing homicide during this stage. Tactics used in the investigation relate to the initial police response, suspect handling, victim identification, forensic medical examination, evidence collection, and media relations.
