This two-part webinar will address the essential elements of effective writing, followed by tips and techniques for finding and writing grants. While each is designed to be standalone, taking the essentials of effective writing is a valuable precursor to the grant writing webinar. The two sessions are beneficial for law enforcement officers and associated administrative or support staff. You will improve and expand your skills in writing and researching, with an emphasis on grants.

Webinar Part 1: Essentials of Effective Writing

  • Understanding and incorporating “plain language” into written communications
  • Identifying and writing to the “right” audience
  • Creating and using a purpose statement to focus writing
  • Employing and understanding “bottom line up front” (BLUF) to quickly convey critical messages to high level audiences
  • Simplifying sentences and paragraphs
  • Using bullets for clarity and conciseness
  • Understanding the “Cs” of effective communications
  • Managing documents using outlines or talking points
  • Installing and using readability

Upon completion of webinar part 1, participants will have a good grasp of what makes writing effective, including identifying and writing to the “right” audience and keeping writing simple, concise, and to-the-point. Additionally, the webinar will include techniques for simplifying writing, making writing a process rather than a chore, and identifying audiences and their goals.
